Sound Dhaba: a place to find tasty sound treats
Sound Dhaba is a venture/adventure to uplift emerging musicians who celebrate the musical bonds and echoes between global music traditions and Black American music so that we may find joy, grounding and healing from live music in an intimate space in LA.
Deeper Dive:
History, goals and working principles:
Sound Dhaba is a passion project by a nurse who has found uplift, grounding and healing in live music while serving and caring for many of the most vulnerable people in Los Angeles for almost three decades.
Sound Dhaba was born from a desire to celebrate music’s ability to nurture the soul and bring people together across backgrounds, experiences, and struggles.
Sound Dhaba aims to shine a spotlight on music traditions from across the globe, celebrating the vibrant sounds of the multitudes of traditions across the African, West/ South/ East Asian regions and where these sounds receive the echoes from inside the Americas where forced migrations created bonds of resistance and celebration, in many forms, including through the creation of music, particularly the foundational music created by Black people’s intersections with Indigenous and European traditions across North, Central and South America.
Sound Dhaba will be highlighting the dynamic growth and evolution of music where diverse cultural influences intersect and create exciting new musical landscapes. By embracing these cross-cultural connections Sound Dhaba will be showcasing the global journey of music—where traditions blend, grow, and inspire one another.
Sound Dhaba is rooted in its desire to work with transparency and integrity, offering a space where authentic relationships can be built – not only between artists and their craft but also with the community of music lovers who appreciate the unique stories the musicians share.
As part of its mission Sound Dhaba desires to support the longevity of the artists by trying to meaningfully compensate and celebrate the skilled musicians who provide joy and healing. Simultaneously, Sound Dhaba wants to create space for the seekers of joy and healing who may not usually have the monetary means to attend these events. Sound Dhaba commits to finding the balance with transparency and integrity as relationships are built with each musician and those who love experiencing their musicianship.
Sound Dhaba is working towards sustainability and not monetary enrichment for itself. In transparency with the artists, all artists receive minimally, 80-100% of the $ generated both from tickets and the back of the house.
There is so much amazing music which emerges from global interconnections that are a result of diasporic forces (like: enslavement, colonialism, neo-colonialism, capitalist created economic disasters etc.), our desire & ability to hang on to our humanity in spite of these diabolical forces and the advances in technology which allow continuous connectivity and capacity for new sounds.
Sound Dhaba looks forward to creating a community space in LA for all of that which is essential to humanity: music, poetry, storytelling and art both its creators and those who take nourishment from it.
