Chris Powe grew up with the full range of Black music ringing in his ears: from soul, R&B, gospel and, of course, hip hop. As hip-hop sampling brought bits and bytes of so many legendary jazz musicians to the ears of young Black folks it helped re-fertilize a love of jazz with the post-bop generation of jazz musicians who brought Black Jazz back to life in LA (think: Kamasi Washington, Thundercat etc.), Chris was growing up, right in the heart of where it was all happening in LA, he was hearing these young lions of jazz, listening as their sounds grew to their full and deep expressions of themselves, while weaving between hip hop artistry which was including more jazz and the jazz musicians who are weaving in hip-hop rhythms. Interestingly it was a trip to an international youth music festival in Chengdu, China which solidified for Chris the desire to be a musician. He has received the support and care of Scott Mayo, an LA music industry power house, to shape his sound. Listen closely as Chris brings his sound to your ears in a live intimate setting and see if you can hear the echoes of past and current legends of this great Black American Art Form we call Jazz.
The Genesys Project brings a fresh perspective to modern jazz through original compositions that balance exploration and tradition. Formed by Varad Sahasrabudhe (guitar), Joseph Nguyen (keys), Adam Hernandez (bass), and Luke Davis (drums), the group draws from the rich history of jazz while blending in the unique cultural influences of its members. Varad Sahasrabudhe is an incredible guitarist and a composer noted for his broad musical style. His compositions blend his cultural heritage, integrating ideas and sounds inspired from his Marathi roots in Pune, India, a city deeply rooted in its Indian Classical traditions. Joseph Nguyen is a Los Angeles-based jazz pianist and composer. His early musical experience included classical training and accompanying choirs in Vietnamese churches. His original music takes inspiration from contemporary jazz, choro, hip hop, rock, avant-garde, and classical music. Adam Hernandez is a Los Angeles–based jazz bass player, composer, and multidisciplinary artist.Rooted in the jazz tradition yet driven by curiosity and experimentation, his musical voice draws inspiration from the lyrical harmony of Bill Evans, the fearless innovation of Ornette Coleman, and the contemporary sound world of James Francies. Luke Henry Davis is a jazz drummer, composer, and arranger. Luke was awarded the Ron Jones Drum Scholarship for Outstanding Musician at the Teagarden Jazz Festival. Their sound is shaped by the atmospheric clarity of ECM and the rhythmic intensity of fusion which is marked by spacious harmonies, dynamic grooves, and an improvisational approach that stays open and purposeful.

With John Villalobos heading it up this month.
